Scripture Union Daily Guide 19 September 2024 Outline
Parents are responsible for the right upbringing of their children. They are mandated to bring the children up in the way of the Lord. Where necessary, discipline should be applied. That is why we are admonished not to spare the rod and spoil the child (Proverbs 13:24). Eli certainly had a weakness around the discipline of his children. What was the problem with Eli’s children (vs.12-13)?
Notice how they are described in v.12. Why were they so particular about taking the offering which rightly belongs to God (v.12b). This explains why God wanted a replacement for the priesthood. No wonder Samuel was being trained and prepared to step into the priesthood. How much of such decadence do we find in our societies? Could this have started at home or in the so-called spiritual children that were not well brought up (Genesis 18:19)?
What would have happened had Hannah failed to fulfil her vow (v.18)? Observe the blessings that came upon Hannah because of her faithfulness. She sowed into the kingdom and the Lord was faithful to her. In what areas have you been challenged to be faithful? Notice the contrast with Samuel. He was growing in the presence of the Lord. Meanwhile Hannah did not abandon her son to the priest. She continued to love and care for him despite the other children that she had.
